An oil painting study based on William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s 1888 work, created as an exploration of his refined painting techniques.
I was particularly interested in studying Bouguereau’s approach to portraiture — his subtle modelling of the face, delicate transitions between light and shadow, and carefully observed flesh tones. Working from his painting allowed me to explore the techniques he used to create such a soft, luminous and highly refined finish.
This painting formed part of my ongoing study of traditional European painting methods and my fascination with the techniques of the great academic painters.
