A study of the painting techniques of William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905), based on his depiction of a young woman in side profile.
This study provided an opportunity to explore Bouguereau’s approach to portraiture, particularly his delicate modelling of the face, subtle transitions between light and shadow, and refined handling of flesh tones. I was interested in understanding how these techniques create a soft, luminous quality while retaining a convincing sense of form and structure.
The painting forms part of my ongoing study of traditional European painting methods and my exploration of the techniques of the great academic painters.
