Gabrielle Cot – Bouguereau Study

A portrait study based on William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s Gabrielle Cot, 1890, exploring the painting methods and techniques of one of the great academic painters of the 19th century.

Gabrielle Cot was the daughter of the French painter Pierre Auguste Cot, a notable pupil of Bouguereau. This connection adds an interesting dimension to the work, linking two generations of French academic painting.

In creating this study, I focused on Bouguereau’s refined approach to portraiture — carefully observed form, subtle modelling, delicate flesh tones and the controlled transitions of light and shadow that give the figure a sense of realism and presence.

This painting formed part of my ongoing study of Old Masters realism and traditional European painting methods, learning through close observation and practical exploration of the techniques used by the great academic painters.
