I spotted this emu amongst the scrub near Lake Menindee, about 90 kilometres from Broken Hill, during a road trip through outback Australia.

There was something wonderfully unexpected about seeing this solitary bird standing quietly in the landscape. I was lucky enough to capture the moment with my camera, and this painting grew from that photograph and the memory of the encounter.

Amongst the Scrub is an impressionistic interpretation of the Australian bush, with the soft, layered colours of the landscape providing a gentle contrast to the distinctive form of the emu.
